The mission of the Standards and Ethics Committee is to serve as an advisory board to the SCA Board concerning professional standards and ethical guidelines for all SCA members, and regularly bring issues and solutions to the SCA Board. These standards and guidelines should assist and advise practicing archaeologists, individuals, agencies, and other entities in how to maintain high professional archaeological standards of conduct, documentation, and reporting.
In 2021 the Ethics committee organized an “Ethics Bowl” debate competition for students, modeled after the SAA’s Ethics Bowl. University teams are provided a set of ethical scenarios and potential questions in advance to study. At the Ethics Bowl, student teams are given one scenario and asked specific questions. The opposing team is provided an opportunity to offer an alternative or elaborate on the initial response. Judges rate the responses and the Committee selects a winner.
