This committee is in charge of the James A. Bennyhoff award which is designed to support original research on the prehistory of California and the Great Basin, with special consideration given to projects emphasizing analysis of existing museum collections, those housed in regional repositories, and/or those described in technical reports with the goal of developing or revising local and/or regional cultural historical sequences. The chair is responsible for soliciting proposals (the structure and content of which are outlined on the SCA website), forming a review committee for the evaluation of the proposals, and choosing the recipient of the award. As of 2020, the chair is also responsible for finding a group or individual to produce a quilt made from the David Fredrickson fabric collection, and auction off that quilt at the SCA Annual Meeting to generate additional funds for the Bennyhoff Award.
