Staff Archaeologist/GIS Technician/Illustrator

Applied EarthWorks, Inc. (Æ) has an immediate opening for a full-time Staff Archaeologist/GIS Technician with photography and illustration skills. Æ is a consulting firm specializing in history, archaeology, cultural resources management (CRM), and paleontology. Duties:

The successful candidate will work on cultural resources projects throughout the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada within California. GIS work will include management of GIS and GPS data; creation and maintenance of project specific geodatabases and shapefiles; georeferencing; and production of report quality maps. Illustration involves photography of prehistoric and historic artifacts in laboratory settings and editing of images to scale for report production. Archaeological tasks may include participation in field survey, testing and data recovery projects; construction monitoring.

 

Skill Requirements: 

  • Certification or demonstrable skills with ArcGIS and ArcPro;
  • Experience in museum/laboratory artifact photography and/or image editing using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator;
  • Familiarity with Survey123 and Collector applications for fieldwork;
  • Conducting records searches;
  • Basic technical writing and report preparation;
  • Ability to collect field data using a Trimble Geo X7 or other GPS devices;
  • Ability to work cooperatively with construction contractors, tribal monitors, and other project stakeholders;
  • Basic understanding of CRM laws and regulations; and
  • Strong work ethic and good communication skills.

 

Education/Experience:

Undergraduate or graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, historical archaeology, or related field. Experience in GIS and Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator is required. Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) certification and California CRM experience preferred.
