The Department of Archaeology  invites applications for a Practitioner Faculty position, Heritage Resource Management (Half-Time)

Start Date: July 1, 2021

End Date: May 30, 2022

Position: The Department of Archaeology at Simon Fraser University seeks an entrepreneurial cultural resource management (CRM) professional to lead and expand an established online master’s degree program in Heritage Resource Management (HRM) (http://www.sfu.ca/archaeology/graduate/hrm.html).

This is a half-time position with continuation beyond the initial, 10-month term contingent on enrolment of a 2021 student cohort of sufficient size to assure HRM Program sustainability. Practitioner Faculty bring significant professional experience to university teaching and research, and may be appointed at a professorial rank (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor), depending on qualifications.

Applicant Requirements: The successful candidate will (1) hold a Ph.D. or equivalent qualification in archaeology or a related field; (2) have at least five years of executive or senior management experience in commercial archaeology or heritage management practice, with a record of management success; (3) maintain accreditation as a Registered Professional Archaeologist during the appointment; and (4) demonstrate expertise in teaching, in supervising master’s or doctoral level researchers, and in developing research and outreach partnerships.

Applicant Experience Desired but Not Required: (1) online curriculum development and delivery; (2) the integration of graduate and / or undergraduate students in field or laboratory research projects and programs.

Position Duty Requirements: The successful applicant will normally (1) teach one of the four HRM Program core courses; (2) supervise multiple HRM Program master’s students; (3) provide leadership in all HRM Program areas, including marketing, budgeting, curriculum development, student recruitment, student supervision, and administration; (4) personally design and lead the annual HRM Program orientation; (5) participate in all or most HRM Program student defences; and (6) sustain and expand participation in and support for the HRM Program from Archaeology Department faculty and staff.

Other Details: The initial position offering is a 10-month contract, internally funded as a half-time Practitioner Faculty position. Renewal of the appointment is contingent on satisfactory performance, evidence of sustainability of the HRM Program, and upon the availability of internal or external funding. Salary, benefits and conditions of employment are contained in the collective agreement between SFU and the SFU Faculty Association (https://www.sfu.ca/faculty-relations/collectiveagreement.html) (note that the new collective agreement has yet to be posted).

Annual contract renewals, commencing with 2022, will be subject to budgetary approval and HRM Program viability.

The incumbent will have full faculty access to SFU research support services and SFU Archaeology’s state-of-the-art research facilities. The incumbent will be encouraged to participate in all aspects of the Department of Archaeology’s learning community. Additional compensation beyond the half-time appointment is possible, but not guaranteed, through grants, contracts, and additional teaching of SFU courses outside of the HRM Program.
