HELIX Environmental Planning, Inc. (HELIX), a growing, employee-owned California-based
environmental consulting and planning firm, is currently seeking multiple as-needed
archaeological Field Technicians for our Cultural Resources Division for approximately six (6)
months of work in Tuolumne County. HELIX is a full-service environmental firm providing
cultural resources, biological, landscape architecture, regulatory permitting, acoustical, air
quality, habitat restoration, and GIS services to public and private clients across a variety of
sectors.
This position will require the successful applicant(s) to stay in company provided lodging near
the area of Tuolomne County for a minimum of 6 months beginning in May/June 2023, with
long work days in remote and rugged terrain. As-Needed Field Technician responsibilities
include conducting archaeological survey and/or site recording in rugged terrain under the
direction of a Field Director, digital data collection including photography, completion of daily
logs, and daily communication with supervising Field Director and the Principal
Investigator/Project Manager. Additional responsibilities may include background research,
assistance with report writing, and Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) 523 form
preparation. Candidates must be comfortable with strenuous hiking and working in remote,
rugged areas with potentially adverse cold or heat conditions, sometimes for extended periods;
be knowledgeable of the archaeology and culture history of the Sierra Nevada Mountains or
Stanislaus National Forest; be self-motivated and possess strong written and verbal
communication skills; and work well under the direction of others. Candidates must have
reliable transportation to the work assignment location and have a valid California Driver’s
License. Successful candidates will have a positive team-oriented attitude.

Hourly wages will be based on qualifications and/or experience. Expected starting pay range of
$20 to $35 per hour.

Minimum Requirements for As-Needed Archaeologist:
Must be currently enrolled in or have previously completed college-level classes
towards a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, history of California, Native
American studies, or a closely related field OR
A minimum of 6 months of experience conducting archaeological fieldwork that includes
survey, in-field artifact analysis, or site documentation
Knowledge of the archaeology and cultural history of Tuolumne County, northern and
central Sierra Nevada Mountains, or Stanislaus National Forest
Ability to identify artifacts, cultural features, and archaeological sites
Possess a valid California Driver’s License and 3 years clean driving record
Ability to do strenuous hiking and work full days in remote, rugged mountain areas
Ability to live and work in the Tuolomne County area for extended periods of time
Demonstrate strong written/verbal communication skills
Additional skills considered a plus for As-Needed Archaeologist:
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in anthropology, archaeology, history, Native American
studies, or closely related field, or equivalent experience
Professional cultural resources management experience in California archaeology
Experience preparing DPR forms
Experience with GPS equipment and comfort using digital technology
Current CPR/First-Aid, HAZWOPER, or previous/current USFS “Redcard” certification
Experience using Stanislaus National Forest site condition assessment forms and other
cultural resource forms and reports
