Job Summary

The AECOM Oakland office is seeking an Archaeologist Technician for work on a project-specific basis.

The candidate should be organized and have good communication skills, in order to work independently during construction monitoring projects, coordinating directly with construction crews and client representatives. Must be able to recognize and identify both prehistoric and historic-era archaeological resources, and be able to describe and record such resources accurately.

Under the supervision of the Field Director or Project Director, will conduct archaeological survey and site delineation. Excavate and document test pits and/or units within survey areas and archaeological sites of the project as directed by the Field/Lab Director and Principal Investigators. Keep legible and understandable field notes. Provide acceptable field and lab-documentation. Wash or otherwise clean, sort, catalog, analyze, and prepare for permanent curation all recovered artifacts as directed by the Field/Lab Director and Principal Investigators. Prepare selected samples for specialized studies as directed by the Field/Lab Director and Principal Investigators. Create electronic spreadsheets, inventories, and provide data entry.

Travel required. However, majority of work expected in the San Francisco Bay Area, with no travel stipend or per diem.

The ability and desire to perform extensive fieldwork on potentially difficult terrain and during adverse weather conditions on field assignments ranging from several days, weeks, or months at a time will be essential.

Ability to hike up to 8 – 10 miles per day on a repeated basis necessary for this position.

Good interpersonal skills, writing skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are fundamental.

Attitude and demeanor compatible with collaborative team efforts, ability to professionally interact with clients clearly understanding project approach, and ability to understand expectations of assigned tasks are desired.

Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Performs standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related operations.
  • Conducts a variety of standardized tests and may prepare specimens; Sets up and operates standard laboratory testing equipment of moderate complexity.
  • Records test data and provides observation and interpretations of it.
  • Performs fieldwork, including but not limited to environmental sampling, operations and maintenance and inspections at client sites.
  • Other activities may include assisting with calculations, setting up and operating equipment, inspecting equipment and installations for compliance with specifications and maintaining proper project documentation.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma plus 4 years of archaeological field experience including reconnaissance, survey, testing and site mitigation in the Western United States
  • Must be willing to travel locally to conduct field work
  • Computer proficiency including familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • A valid driver’s license is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cross-training in paleontological field techniques preferred
  • Ability to work nights and weekends preferred
  • Experience conducting specialized artifact analysis preferre
