The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with Eldorado National Forest, is recruiting an Archaeology Crew Lead to support surveys of cultural resources on the forest. The Archaeology Crew Lead will be responsible for coordinating with USFS staff and GBI personnel to conduct Section 106 surveys and to document, assess and characterize the status of new and existing cultural resources, prepare State of California site records, create GIS maps, input data into the Forest Service heritage database, and assist in associated reporting. Field data, collected in accordance with USFS protocols, will be used as a basis for recommending management actions. Each Archaeology Crew Lead, will oversee a two-person crew and will support field safety, communication, planning, logistics, quality assurance, field implementation, and reporting.
Vegetation management projects, including fuels reduction, requiring Section 106 compliance will be the priority on the for Eldorado National Forest. Common resources found in the area include logging and railroad camps with associated artifacts and landscape features and pre-contact sites ranging in age and function.
The work is physically demanding and involves hiking in steep terrain at high altitudes (6,000-9000 ft.) on a daily basis, commonly during extreme or inclement weather conditions such as snow or rain or high wind events. The candidate will need to bring their own gear for such conditions. The position will require working in remote locations on National Forest land.
Work will take place on the Eldorado National Forest (NF), Amador Ranger District, near Pioneer, CA (60 miles east of Sacramento). Located in the central Sierra Nevada, the Eldorado NF is bordered on the east by the Lake Tahoe Basin and the Humboldt-Toiyabe NF, and by the Tahoe and Stanislaus NFs to the north and south, respectively. Recreational and sight-seeing opportunities abound in the vicinity.

o Full time, 40 hours per week, generally Monday-Thursday
