  • The Office of Historic Preservation has kicked off the Governor's Historic Preservation Awards for 2010 with an announcement on our website. The deadline for nominations this year, which for the first time ever includes nominations of individuals who have made significant contributions over time to the cause of historic preservation, is Friday, July 30, 2010. Recipients of this year's awards will be announced at the October 29, 2010 quarterly meeting of the State Historical Resources Commission.

  • Alert from Greg Greenway to the historic preservation community: The USFS is soliciting input nationally from a variety of publics, tribes, and organizations re: its planning rule that will provide direction on what forests will consider and include in their revised Forest Land and Resource Management Plans. These plans can include specific direction for managing cultural resouces, special areas set aside for cultural resource values etc. In the 1970s, this process also initiated forest development of archaeological, historical, and sometimes ethnographic overviews that formed contextual bases for subsequent evaluations and management decisions at the project level. Many of these are now dated. You can stay up-to-date on all these activities by visiting the planning rule website and the planning rule blog.

  • NEW Perfect Storm tools are now available! As stimulus funds begin making their way into states and local communities, the Center for State and Local Policy and Statewide and Local Partnerships of the National Trust for Historic Preservation are continuing to develop tools to help. We're doing this in partnership with the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the National Park Service and others.

Following a series of Perfect Storm calls with more than 200 participants from 46 states, we've expanded and developed new resources to help as states and communities work to make a strong case for historic preservation as a stimulus activity. The stimulus presents an unprecedented opportunity for funding "preservation-ready" projects that will generate jobs and build the economy. Check out the Perfect Storm web page.

  • Since October of 2007, ASC Staff Archaeologist Michael Newland has been contributing radio commentaries on the intersections between archaeology and everyday life to the Perspectives Series, broadcast weekly from KQED Public Radio in San Francisco. The focus of Perspectives is on California in general and the Bay Area more specifically. Mike works with Perspectives editor Mark Trautwein and the KQED recording personnel for each piece. Links for Mike's commentaries are here.
